Artist's Comments

I spent the afternoon shooting (not so very wild) wildlife at Skansen zoo in Stockholm today. This fox was dozing off on a fallen tree.

Related deviation(s): Ursus arctos

Shot with EOS 10D, EF 300/2.8L IS USM and EF 1.4x TC (672mm equiv.)

Nice! Though I've made some attempts to photograph foxes, it's not easy to get exactly what you want.

Although dozing off is cute, an animal that isn't in a dramatic pose somehow (in my opinion) looks better when its eyes are either open where the camera can show them or its attention is clearly caught by something.

Still, it's a nice crisp image with good color balance; just enough blue in the shadows to counter the warm reds and yellows.

Of foxy ladies, I'm sure! ;) :D

Thanks! :) I thought he was dead at first, but he opened his eyes and peered into space every now and then. Not very lively. ;) I agree that it would have been better if he was alert and his gaze was fixed at something.

this is an amazing looking shot ... :) well done

How did you get that color balance so perfect, though? Was it a digital fix, or just very skillful use of available light and filters?

My pictures, almost all of them (save one I haven't uploaded yet), have been fixed for their various dimensions of color and contrast using Photoshop or similar programs (anything I uploaded before July I used a cheaper program called Arcsoft Photostudio).

I shoot 100% in RAW-mode, so I don't really have to care about white balance (WB) when I shoot as it can be corrected in post production. I always try to approximate the color temperature, though, if I have time. It's a pretty good thing to know. You never know if you'll be forced to shoot JPEG some day. If you want perfect WB, look into getting a greycard. It's basically a bit of cardboard painted with 18% grey (or something like that).

For this shot, I used the camera's built-in WB setting for shade and adjusted it to perfection (well, as close as I can get with this monitor anyway) in the first stage of post-production, using PhaseOne C1 Pro (RAW-workflow program).

A low-intensity softing filter in Photoshop was also applied to this photograph to give it a slight softness to empathize the calmness in this picture, compared to Ursus arctos where contrast was increased to give it a wild look. :)

I love the focusing and the clarity

The colours in this picture are really good, I don't know how to describe it because I'm not one of them photo guru people, but yeah, its pretty neat. I'll have to see if I can make it out to a zoo when I go to the US next year. bears and foxes will be a welcome change from crocs and snakes!
